My youngest granddaughter, Becca, is 4 years old, and my daughter-in-law, Danielle, recently read to her the story about Samuel and Eli – when Eli told Samuel to respond to God’s calling by saying, “Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.”
Danielle asked Becca, “Are you a servant of God?” And Becca said, “No!”
When asked why not, Becca explained, “Well, I don’t want to do what God tells me to do! I want to do what I want to do!”
America has the same problem as my 4-year-old granddaughter. As a country, we’ve told ourselves lies after lies that have manipulated our understanding of what it means to be a nation “under God.” Some of these lies include…
- You can’t legislate morality.
- The Church shouldn’t be involved in politics.
- An embryo isn’t a life; it’s just tissue.
The thing about lies is that if you hear one often enough, you start to believe it – and that’s what has happened to many Americans, even American believers. These lies have convinced many of us that God should be taken out of everything, including our governments, schools, and society, and be confined within the walls of our churches.
As a result, our freedom of religion has been turned into freedom from religion – and it’s why we have so much moral confusion in America today. Without the Bible as our moral foundation, our nation is crumbling!
It is only when we come to the point of “Lord, it’s not my will, but Thy will be done” that we will have renewal, and revival, and healing of a broken America.
