Apply your heart to discipline and your ears to words of knowledge. - PROVERBS 23:12
A heart without direction arrives nowhere. There comes a point when each of us must choose the heart’s direction. To not choose is itself a choice to drift meaninglessly through life. “Applying” our heart to “discipline” means setting the heart’s course on a straight line toward a specific goal.
As a college freshman, my heart drifted spiritually. But a voice whispered inside, “There’s something I want you to do.” One morning at two the quiet voice became a roar. I fell on my knees and prayed, “Lord, I give you all that I am and all that I’ll ever be.” Ultimately, that would mean changing my school, major and career. The new course of my heart sent me out under new disciplines.
I’ve doubted a lot of things, questioned much, failed in bunches, missed God repeatedly. But I have never been uncertain of that defining moment in my life when the course of my heart was set. Say “Yes” to God’s call on your life and the course of your heart will be established.
Is it time to set or redirect the course of your heart to conform to God’s will? Even if you don’t understand the specifics of His will, commit your ways to Him and He will establish your paths.
