“Pick up Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service.” - 2 Timothy 4:11
The Bible contains numerous accounts of individuals who started out well, but got off on a side street and nearly missed realizing their full potential. One such account concerns John Mark, the young man who accompanied Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey. Early in the journey John Mark left them, and Paul was so disappointed that he refused to invite Mark to travel with him on his next journey. Toward the end of his life, however, Paul asked Timothy to “go get John Mark. He will be of good service.”
Something changed, didn’t it? Mark had matured, he had grown in the faith, and he was ready to be used in God’s service once more. He had made a comeback. And his story gives us hope that, for us too, failure does not need to be the end of the story. By the grace of God, we can make a comeback.
