The Cadence of Obedience
"But He said, ‘On the contrary, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.’"Luke 11:28
Quick to listen…slow to speak…slow to anger. Quick to listen…slow to speak…slow to anger. That almost sounds like a dance step, doesn’t it? Quick, slow, slow. Most of us do just the reverse. We’re slow to listen, but quick to speak and to anger. Could that be why Jesus repeated the same instruction a total of 16 times – eight in the gospels, and eight in the book of Revelation? Jesus said, “He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.” We are to be good listeners, to look people in the eye, to seek to understand what they are saying.
The little book of James says that we are to be doers of the Word and not merely hearers. In order for that to happen, we need to allow the truth of God’s Word to be implanted in us. We don’t just hear it, but we live it out. It all starts with hearing. When God is speaking to you, be quick to listen!
