The Man Behind the Curtain
"I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God."1 Corinthians 2:3-5
Most of us have seen the classic children’s movie The Wizard of Oz, with Dorothy skipping down the yellow brick road to see the great and powerful Oz and ask him to help her get home to Kansas. Ultimately, we discover the Wizard of Oz is a phony when Dorothy’s dog, Toto, pulls back a curtain revealing a mere human with a loud microphone. The film provides a fitting depiction of human wisdom, as Dorothy discovers she had everything she needed all along to get home – no greater help was necessary.
Human wisdom, however, never brings true joy, meaning, or fulfillment. But God’s wisdom leads to a life that is alive with purpose, meaning, and power – a life of abundance. We know that to be true because, when we pull back that curtain, we discover we have a “Greater Help” that is essential for life – the power of God in Jesus Christ.
