“And opening His mouth, He (Jesus) began to teach them, saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”Matthew 5:2-3
The Sermon on the Mount begins with the Beatitudes, eight statements about what it means to be “blessed” by God. They give us a picture of the Christian who is genuinely happy because he has a joy that only Christ can give, a joy that is independent of circumstances. This joy comes because we have the approval of God on our lives. God looks at your life, and looks at my life, and He smiles. To be blessed is to have the smile of God on us, and this comes when we begin to incorporate the principles we find in God’s Word into our lives. Ask God to teach you these eight truths we know as the Beatitudes, then apply them in your life. You will soon discover the thrill that comes from knowing the smile of God.
