Bottom feeders

August 15, 2018
Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited. - HEBREWS 13:9

Bottom feeders are scavengers who range the floor of a body of water, looking for food from every unsavory source. Sometimes, categories of professional people are labeled “bottom feeders” because they search for profit in the mire of human life.

Spiritually, a bottom feeder gobbles in “varied and strange teachings.” No matter how contradictory to truth an idea might be, the bottom-feeding heart finds it tasty. Bottom feeders delight in the alien and exotic, no matter how destructive. The bottom-feeding heart goes to ever darker levels, from depravity to sensuality and from rationalization to rebellion. Finally it goes so deep in the murkiness that the bottom-feeding heart gets stuck in the mud.

The opposite of the bottom-feeding heart is that one nourished by grace. The ingredients of grace include the bitter of acknowledging sin and the sweet of God’s forgiveness. Grace is found down at the bottom, too, but it leads to the top!

TODAY’S FOCUS
Ask for wisdom to not be attracted to ideas, concepts and trends just because they are exotic and novel.
