Deep probe

June 12, 2018
But Thou knowest me, O LORD; Thou seest me; And Thou dost examine my heart's attitude toward Thee … - JEREMIAH 12:3

Cardiologists like my friends Mike Duncan and Rick Leachman use complex instruments to look at the deepest regions of the human heart. A surface exam is inadequate to diagnose and treat life-threatening disease.

The Old Testament laws were great for understanding surface problems, but Jesus said He had come to probe deeper—right down to the level of attitude. The Commandment says, “You shall not murder.” Jesus doesn’t set aside the Law, but says a murderous attitude is the equivalent of the literal act in the eyes of Holy God.

Attitude is crucial, so, says Jeremiah literally, God “draws out” our heart’s attitude toward Him. In a biopsy, a physician cuts out a piece of tissue and removes it from the body. Then the material is examined for evidences of disease. God “biopsies” our heart attitude toward Him because the way we regard Him determines how we regard all else. Allow grace to shape your attitude toward God, and you will fulfill the Law.

TODAY’S FOCUS
Is your attitude toward God shaped by a view of Him as Giver of law or grace? Ask the Lord for a fresh vision of His grace.
