Freighting the Heart

April 29, 2018
I appeal to you for my child Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my imprisonment, who formerly was useless to you, but now is useful both to you and to me. I have sent him back to you in person, that is, sending my very heart, -Philemon 10-12
Plant your heart in somebody, and wherever they go, they carry your passion. Onesimus is a slave, owned by Philemon. Onesimus gets a change to bolt, and hightails it to Rome. Maybe he’s frightened in the big city, homeless and hungry. Onesimus knows one person there, Paul, who sits in a cell. Never mind. Onesimus is so desperate that he finds Paul, who introduces him to Christ. Paul relishes his cell because it’s a birthing room where Roman guards and runaway slaves get born into God’s Kingdom. Paul bottle-feeds this spiritual “baby” with the milk of God’s Word. Then Paul downloads his spiritual and emotional heart, his devotion and vision, to Onesimus. Now Paul wraps him up and ships him back to Philemon, who probably is really surprised when this package shows up on his front door!

Somewhere there’s a person in whom God wants you to plant your heart. It may be a youngster who will outlive you, and take your heart across time as well as space. Look for that special person, and be ready to “download” your heart into him or her.

TODAY’S HEART FOCUS
Ask God to show you the person you should be discipling, the person in whom you should be planting your devotion and commitment to Christ. Also ask God to show you how to implant your heart in that person.
