Heart bait

November 14, 2018
Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. - 1 PETER 5:8

The devil is not omniscient, and to know your heart he must study your behavior, so he “prowls” and “seeks.” A couple of our sons are fishermen. They study fish habits, spot a pile of brush and get ready to drop bait because big bass are likely to be lurking there.

The key is the bait. So my fisher-sons study the color and size and shape and sound of artificial lures. They want to use the right one at the right time at the right place. The devil watches our walk, and studies our behavior so he can drop his bait into the deeps of our heart and snag us. The bait the devil uses matches the yearning of our heart, revealed in our external actions.

Growing in Christ means learning to distinguish bait from real food. Heart-bait promises nourishment to the flesh’s desires, but God’s real food appeals to the spirit.

TODAY’S FOCUS
Pray for discernment to distinguish the bait from the real thing.
