Honeymoon heart

October 29, 2018
"Go forth, O daughters of Zion, and gaze on King Solomon with the crown with which his mother has crowned him on the day of his wedding, and on the day of his gladness of heart” … "You have made my heart beat faster, my sister, my bride; you have made my heart beat faster with a single glance of your eyes, with a single strand of your necklace.” - SONG OF SOLOMON 3:11; 4:9

Jo Beth and I sneaked out the back door of the church after our wedding to escape devious buddies. We outfoxed them, changed cars three times, and finally made it to our honeymoon spot.

I still remember the “gladness of heart” on our wedding day, and joyfulness of that honeymoon. We married on Sunday, had our brief honeymoon on the coast, then visited family, hooked up a U-Haul trailer, and drove to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where, on the next Sunday I preached in the church where I was pastor.

Reality soon smacked into our honeymoon hearts. But what followed was a new maturity, a more settled joy rather than mere heart fluttering, and a new intimacy.

New believers in Christ often experience honeymoon heart, boosted by the new awareness of freedom from sin, and fire for God. My hope always is that when the honeymoon heart gets hit with trials and testing it will not depend on emotions, but solid, mature faith that lasts a lifetime!

TODAY’S FOCUS
Ask the Lord to search your heart and determine if you are still trying to function at the honeymoon stage, or if there is maturity of faith developing.
