Penned on the heart

October 16, 2018
You are our letter, written in our hearts, known and read by all men; being manifested that you are a letter of Christ, cared for by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. - 2 CORINTHIANS 3:2-3

The Law, the “dead letter,” was written on tablets of stone while Grace, the “living letter,” is written on human hearts.Without the Law, we would not know wrong from right. But the Law is “dead,” unable to correct the problems it points out. (2 CORINTHIANS 3:6) The Law is the diagnostician of the heart, but Grace is the physician. The Law says something’s wrong with me, but Grace says it can be made right.

The Old Covenant is head religion, but the New Covenant is heart truth. The Old Covenant is holy things, while the New Covenant is holy people. The Law on stone tablets taught us important things about doing, and the Grace written on heart tablets teaches us about being.

In a sense, the Law is written on our hearts and we have an instinctive sense of right and wrong, and are therefore accountable. (ROMANS 2:15) But the Grace written as the living letter by the Holy Spirit overlays the Law-letter! When Grace blots out Law our hearts are free of condemnation.

TODAY’S FOCUS
Revere the Law and rejoice in grace!
