Stand up for the turkeys

…but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, and the base things of the world and the despised, God has chosen the things that are not that He might nullify the things that are, that no man should boast before God. 1 CORINTHIANS 1:27-29
Turkeys everywhere have the right to cry, “Foul!” Once we honored the bird as the bird we stuffed at Thanksgiving so it could stuff us. Now a “turkey” is dumb, naïve simpleton. So it’s time to put in a good word for the turkey.
God builds His Kingdom on “turkeys.” Simon Peter gobbles foolishly all over the landscape and Jesus makes him an eloquent spokesman He names “Rocky.” John Mark was more of a chicken than a turkey. He hops off the trail when difficulty comes, and leaves Paul and Barnabas. Later, Paul refuses to travel with him, and loses his buddy, Barnabas, a turkey ally. Later, though, God has transformed John Mark from a turkey to a tiger, and Paul says, “I’ve got to have him!”
Mary Magdalene was as “turkey” as you can get. But Jesus turns her into the bold woman who beats everybody else to the empty tomb. There’s hope for me—and you. Let’s hear it for the turkeys!
