Sunday best

October 08, 2018
…seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. - 2 PETER 1:3-4

As a teen, my arms kept getting longer than my sleeves! I couldn’t afford to buy new shirts to keep up with my growth. Youngsters today often wear hip-hugging jeans, flip-flops and tee shirts to church. The concept of “Sunday best” has faded. But when I was a boy I strove to wear my best clothes, even if the shirt sleeves were too short.

God has called our hearts to excellence, the extraordinary quality that is one’s very best effort or accomplishment. Jesus Christ demonstrated “excellence” of heart in His mission to win our salvation. He was so effective that His work endures forever and saves us to “the uttermost.” (HEBREWS 7:25)

A young man attends our church regularly, wearing a white tee shirt every Sunday. He is economically disadvantaged, and it’s likely the best he owns. But the young adult asks our pastors penetrating questions, revealing the hunger in his heart for moral excellence. He always shows up in his “Sunday best”!

TODAY’S FOCUS
As you consider dressing your best for today’s activities, focus on dressing your moral heart with excellence.
