The aloof heart
Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, falling away from the living God. - HEBREWS 3:12
“She is standoffish,” a woman said of a snobbish acquaintance. The heart that falls away from God is one that stands apart from, or is aloof from God. Unbelief is the cause. To reject faith in God is to say either He does not exist or that He is not worthy of one’s trust. In both cases, this is spiritual snobbery.
That the aloof heart is described as “falling away” or “departing” infers that once the person believed in God, but lost that trust. The Israelites bounded through the dry bottom of the split sea, but skidded to a stop at the edge of the Jordan, when spies reported there were giants on the other side.
Suddenly, those who walked with God through the desert became standoffish at the river. The problem was that they believed the negative report of the spies more than they believed God.
Any time we doubt God’s capability in a situation we will become standoffish toward Him.
