The Cynical Heart

May 10, 2018
Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life. -Proverbs 13:12
Cynicism is idealism soured through frustration.

Once I saw a football player with a neck injury. His neck was frozen in metal, with external steel rods substituting for the internally weakened bones and muscles. Frustration was inscribed on the young man’s brow. He could only look right and left, but not up.

Because of the deep cultural divide in America now, people are tending to look only right or left politically and philosophically. But those whose minds are biblically formed, and who consider themselves disciples of Jesus Christ know how to look upward.

That’s always the direction of hope. If you look to politicians or philosophers for idealistic dreams and plans, your heart will be sickened with frustration, cynicism and despair.

Look beyond the right and left of the cultural wars by yanking off the steel bindings and gazing upward at God and His Kingdom, revealed in Scripture!

SPIRITUAL HEART FOCUS
Ask God to help you look above and beyond human beings and their movements as the source of your hope, and see it all in Him.
