The Grace Elixir

May 24, 2018
Do not be carried away by varied and strange teachings; for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, through which those who were so occupied were not benefited.  -Hebrews 13:9

All the religions in the world are about law, what humans can do to win God’s favor. Only one spiritual truth is about grace—what God has done to make us right. This is why only Jesus’ message can be called “gospel,” “good news.”

Law is a depressant. Human beings struggle to be good enough for God. That was the problem addressed in Hebrews 13:9. The message was that law-bound Hebrews shouldn’t think a good relationship with God was in a return to the kosher table.

Now, law religions mandate people pray daily a specified number of times, burn candles, count beads and keep countless other rituals. But how many candles does one have to burn to placate God?

Grace is the elixir for the heart. It focuses on being right rather than doing right. We are made right with God in Jesus Christ. When we are right, doing right flows. This encourages the heart just like a good medicine!
