The size of the Cross
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man; so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fullness of God. - EPHESIANS 3:14-19
Jaynie was touring a great cathedral with her grandfather. She had never seen a full-size cross, and suddenly found herself before a huge crucifix bearing the sculpted form of Jesus.
“Pa-Pa, who’s that on that cross?” she asked. The little girl’s granddaddy took her aside, and gently explained about Christ’s atonement. He explained that Jesus wanted to dwell in her heart, and the child invited Christ to set up residence there. Jaynie grasped not only the physical size of the cross, but its spiritual immensity.
You and I can look at the cross and know that it is tall enough to span the distance from the fallen world to the Throne of God, and its beams are wide enough to include sinners like us. Most important, the work accomplished by Jesus Christ on that cross was of sufficient size and effectiveness to fill the heart with all the fullness of God.
