The smoking gun

July 09, 2018
For when Gentiles who do not have the Law do instinctively the things of the Law, these, not having the Law, are a law to themselves, in that they show the work of the Law written in their hearts, their conscience bearing witness and their thoughts alternately accusing or else defending them… - ROMANS 2:14-15

I accepted Christ as my Savior at age 11, and have never doubted my salvation. However, at college, I drifted spiritually. But deep in my heart, I knew I still belonged to God. The witness of the Spirit within me was the “smoking gun,” the clear proof. The evidence both defended and accused me. I was assured of my salvation, but I also knew I was guilty of sin. Ultimately, that led me to repentance, and my lifestyle and worldview changed.

God holds us accountable because the “smoking gun” is in every person, even those who reject Him. A person is guilty because the eternal law of God is objective, not subjective. It’s not based on our feelings any more than is the law of gravity, but on the reality of its existence. And the fact that every human being has a sense of right and wrong is the “smoking gun.” The evidence can lead us to innocence or guilt. The choice is ours.
