What’s under the hood?

September 16, 2018
Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, but wait until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of men's hearts; and then each man's praise will come to him from God. - 1 CORINTHIANS 4:5

Motives are the engines that drive our behaviors. When God searches our hearts, He “lifts” the “hood” and examines the power-source that energizes our actions.

Our church has a car repair ministry. Volunteers try to fix automobiles of folks who might not be able to afford service for their vehicles, like single moms. A car may be running, but making an odd noise. The mechanic knows that even though the engine seems to be functioning, he must discover what’s really going on.

Outwardly, our lives may be running smoothly. But God can detect the early signs of dysfunction. When God discovers impure motives “under the hood,” in our hearts, He begins the work of purification. Sometimes this “overhaul” is hard on us. But when God works on the “engine,” He discovers the wrong reasons driving our behaviors appears to be good, and transforms them into the right motives that produce excellent actions!

TODAY’S FOCUS
As God continues examining your heart, ask Him to reveal and cleanse you of impure motives.
