When the heart ‘loses’ God

July 08, 2018
If I say, surely the darkness shall cover me; even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. (KJV) - PSALM 139:11-12

“Pastor, I’ve lost God!” the young man cried.

“What happened?” I asked.

“I rededicated my life to Christ,” he replied. “I’ve started reading my Bible and praying more, but God doesn’t seem to be there anymore.” Then he told me he had taken a girl to a motel, and spent the night with her. “I thought it would be a night of bliss, but it was horrible, and since then I can’t find God.”

I opened the Bible to PSALM 139:8. When I read the words, “when I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there,” he began to weep. The student realized that God was there that night, watching and grieving. The young man discovered his heart had never lost God. When he grasped the immensity of God’s love and grace, my young friend’s heart was flooded with love for God, and has remained so through many years. We would all overcome temptation much easier if we understood that we meet God in those places where we think we can hide in the darkness.

TODAY’S FOCUS
Are you currently experiencing the sense of “losing” God from your heart? The question is not, Where is God? rather, it is, Where are you? Reach out to Him in confession and repentance. Your heart will find that He never left.
