When the zeal fades

October 11, 2018
Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary. - GALATIANS 6:9

Once I was chaplain to a small town fire department. They gave me the big hat, rubber boots, and let me ride the fire truck. I was thrilled! One Saturday I was up late finishing my sermon. At 2 a.m. the fire alarm shrieked. We fought the blaze, and I was in bed again at 4 a.m. An hour later, there was another alarm. When I preached wearily that morning, I wasn’t so thrilled at being a fireman!

I’ve known people who started out with Christ with the thrill of a full run. But after a few “fires” tested their faith, the zeal faded. Thank God for the firefighters who continue to battle blazes after the zeal for the big hat and boots has diminished. And thank God for faithful people who do not lose heart for Christ and His Kingdom when conversion’s zealousness seems to shrink.

Mature people have moved from being motivated by adventure to being driven by commitment. They keep going when the zeal fades.

TODAY’S FOCUS
Are you still devoted to Christ and His Kingdom even if the initial “zeal” has faded?
