Why God is bigger than your circumstances

May 01, 2017
PSALM 62:6 - He only is my rock and my salvation, my stronghold; I shall not be shaken.

Dr. Robert Wilson was a Princeton Theological Seminary professor and Hebrew scholar. Dr. Wilson made it a practice to hear every one of his students when they preached at Millard Chapel, but he would hear them only one time.

Someone asked him, “Dr. Wilson, when you go back to hear your students, what are you looking for? What are you listening for?” Dr. Wilson’s answer was unusual: “I’m just trying to determine whether they are a little God-er or a big God-er. I only need to hear them once to know.” He went on to explain, “If they are little God-ers, I know their ministry won’t go far, and they’ll probably always be struggling. But if they are big God-ers, I know God will work through them in a wonderful way.”  The man asked him how he could make the distinction between little God-ers and big God-ers. “A little God-er,” he said, “will begin with a series of problems, and he’ll have a low view of scripture. He won’t perceive God as One who is actively involved in the lives of people, and will consider Him a force to be manipulated rather than a Person to be worshipped. A big God-er, he went on to say, “talks about the God who is moving in history, and he speaks of the relevance and authority of God’s timeless word.”

Are you a little God-er or a big God-er? You don’t have to be a preacher to know. Are your circumstances bigger than God, or is He bigger than your circumstances? What worries occupy your mind? What passions drive you? If the minutiae of life overwhelm you, your God is too small!
